Family Begins at Maimonides
Deciding to start a family—or have another child—can be a time of joy and excitement. If you’re struggling to get pregnant, though, you need expert care. Maimonides Health Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Services has delivered superior, comprehensive fertility treatment and medicine for more than 25 years. Our compassionate endocrinology and fertility specialists in Brooklyn diagnose and treat female and male fertility every day. They also provide specialized care for women 35 and older.
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
Fertility struggles affect roughly 10 percent of women and men. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a year or longer and haven’t been successful, a fertility doctor may be able to help. Our experts can evaluate you and suggest tests that can identify the cause of your fertility problems.
We also recommend making an appointment with one of our specialists if you:
- Are over 35
- Have a diagnosed reproductive problem
- Have a thyroid condition
- Have had multiple miscarriages
- Were diagnosed with cancer
What Fertility Testing Do We Offer?
If you’re struggling to get pregnant, your biggest question is likely “why?” Our fertility specialists can perform these tests to diagnose the reason behind your fertility struggles:
- Blood tests to measure your estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone and progesterone levels
- Cervical mucus test to evaluate sperm movement and survival
- Chlamydia test (this sexually transmitted infection can impact your fertility)
- Imaging tests to reveal blockages or structural problems with your Fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus
- Laparoscopy, a surgery to examine your Fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus
- Semen sample test to evaluate sperm quality

What Is In Vitro Fertilization?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) occurs outside the body in a laboratory dish. It’s the most common procedure used to help you get pregnant. During the process, our fertility doctors remove mature eggs from the ovaries and put them in the laboratory dish with specially prepared sperm to create embryos.
The embryos grow in the laboratory dish for several days. We implant one or more in the uterine lining to potentially result in pregnancy. If you have more embryos than we can safely implant at one time, we freeze (cryopreserve) them so you can use them later. Some embryos may not survive when they thaw. But there’s no increased risk of congenital abnormalities if you get pregnant.
The IVF process involves many steps, including:
- Artificial insemination with male’s sperm
- Donor egg program
- Genetic counseling
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- Oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing)
- Ovulation induction
- Preimplantation genetic diagnosis
- Psychological services
- Therapeutic donor insemination
The cost of IVF at Maimonides varies based on the services you need or choose.
Genetic Counseling for Patients Undergoing IVF
Some genetic conditions can make it harder to get pregnant. Others can put your baby at risk for future health problems. So, it’s important to know if you or your partner have a genetic condition that impacts your fertility.
At Maimonides, we offer genetic tests that can identify a wide variety of inherited conditions, including cystic fibrosis or Tay-Sachs disease. We can also detect other chromosomal problems that commonly affect women 35 and older. Our genetic counselors offer you the support and information you need to decide if you want to undergo genetic testing.
Egg Donation Program
Healthy eggs are a vital part of the IVF process. However, some women cannot produce healthy eggs on their own. This is where the Maimonides Egg Donation Program steps in. We can provide high-quality donated eggs to maximize the chances of a successful pregnancy. Explore our donor program to learn about receiving donated eggs or becoming a donor.
