Dr. Charusheela Andaz is the Associate Director of the Breast Surgery Division at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Andaz received her medical training at Grant Medical College. She is board-certified in Surgery, and is an integral part of the dedicated Maimonides Breast Surgery team. Dr. Charusheela Andaz is currently involved in several research projects, and is a recent recipient of a grant from the Maimonides Research Foundation. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Andaz special interests focus on the advances in surgical procedures available for breast cancer patients, including combining techniques in breast conservation surgery with radiation therapy and immediate reconstruction. She is also interested in a recent innovation, the sentinel node biopsy, which avoids axillary node dissection in suitable patients. If the sentinel nodes show no evidence of cancer, then the patients can be spared having an axillary node dissection, minimizing the side effects of breast surgery. Dr. Andaz is an advocate of breast conservation surgery, and established a special surveillance breast program in which women with increased risk of breast cancer due to family history or other factors are identified and monitored. She has been the recipient of many honors throughout her career, such as winner of First and Second Prize for Scientific Exhibit from the Nassau Surgical Society, and First Prize for Scientific Exhibit from the Radiology Association of North America.
