Where can I get free HIV testing in Brooklyn?
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene currently performs free testing for HIV. Information about the Brooklyn Knows program can be obtained by calling 311 or visiting www.nyc.gov/health.
Can my employer obtain the results of my HIV test?
Your employer cannot obtain the results of your HIV test without your consent.
I don't have health insurance. Can you help me?
The Life Forward Program can assist you in obtaining insurance coverage based on your eligibility. The AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) can provide coverage for many individuals who are not eligible for other insurance.
I get annual health examinations. Do I need to request HIV testing?
Yes. In New York state, new regulations only require verbal consent. Patients will be informed by the doctor or can request a test.
Are the results of HIV testing confidential?
Your HIV testing results cannot be given to individuals such as relatives, friends, or employers without your specific consent. However, all results are reported to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and may be provided to your health care providers, insurance provider, and at-risk contacts (sexual or needle-sharing partners) without your consent.
What do I do if I test positive for HIV?
If you test positive for HIV, see your doctor right away. If you do not have a doctor that specializes in the management of HIV, our Life Forward Program performs all required evaluations. We discuss treatment options with you in detail, prescribe appropriate treatment when necessary, encourage routine appointments, and provide all needed HIV-related care. Infectious Disease physicians see all patients.
