Dr. Elie Hamaoui is an internist/nutritionist who joined Maimonides as Medical Director of Metabolic Support and has led the Maimonides Nutrition Center, which he started shortly after arriving in 1994. The program provides important clinical support to several other programs, including Bariatric Surgery, the cardiac LVAD Program, Cardiac Rehabilitation, and others. Dr. Hamaoui received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine, did his residency training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and completed fellowship training in Nutrition and Metabolism at Columbia University. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Science Center at Brooklyn, and he has lectured and/or published on various Nutrition topics including tube feeding and intravenous nutrition, peri-operative nutrition, geriatric nutrition, obesity, nutrition in pregnancy, the Nutrition Support Team, and ethics in nutrition support. His appointments have included Peer Reviewer for the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, member of the Public Policy Committee of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, member of the Veterans Administration Clinical Nutrition Advisory Group, and Expert Consultant for the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct. His current focus in the Nutrition Center, where he has a large practice in weight reduction, is on preventing weight regain. Although Clinical Nutrition is at times classified under Endocrinology, and many of Dr. Hamaoui's patients have endocrine disease, he stresses that he is not an endocrinologist and his role is to treat accompanying malnutrition, obesity or other condition that exacerbates or is exacerbated by the endocrine condition.n
