Dr. Steven Konstadt joined Maimonides in 2005 as the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and, since his arrival, the Department has seen many positive developments. It has since grown to 35 full-time attending physicians, many of whom were trained in the country's leading programs, and offers enhanced subspecialty anesthesia care in cardiac, thoracic, pediatric, orthopedic, urologic, neurosurgical and obstetrical/gynecologic surgery. Another positive development is the greatly improved acute postoperative and chronic pain management divisions. The Department of Anesthesiology is highly compliant with the National Surgical Care Improvement Program (SCIP) and received extremely high marks from The Joint Commission during its latest survey. The Anesthesiology Resident Training Program has also flourished. In its most recent evaluation by the Residency Review Committee, the Program received the highest possible rating. On a scholarly level, the Department of Anesthesiology has been extremely active participating in funded, multicenter trials and publishing its clinical experiences. Dr. Konstadt was graduated from Columbia University with a B.S. Summa Cum Laude. He then attended Yale University School of Medicine, and did his Residency at Harvard's training hospital MGH. During his more than 25 years as a cardiac anesthesiologist, Dr. Konstadt has been a pioneer in the intraoperative applications of transesophageal echocardiography. He has written numerous papers and chapters on this subject, and edited several texts as well. In recognition of his contribution to the field of cardiac anesthesiology, Dr. Konstadt served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and recently completed a two-year term as President of that organization. During his clinical career, Dr. Konstadt returned to Columbia University to earn an MBA which focused on Management, Finance, and Turnarounds. The combination of this additional education and his professional experiences clearly prepared him for his leadership role at Maimonides.
