Dr. Savel is currently the Vice-Chair for Inpatient Operations for the Department of Surgery as well as the Director of Adult Critical Care Services at the medical center. He received his undergraduate bachelor's degree in Biochemistry at Yale University and his MD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed his internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Subsequently, he completed a multidisciplinary Critical Care fellowship at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. Dr. Savel is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Neurology at SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. He has been a Critical Care attending physician since 2002, with board certification in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Neurocritical Care. In terms of his formal leadership and management training: he has completed the Leadership Development Program for Physicians in Academic Health Centers at the Harvard School of Public Health; he obtained the Certified Physician Executive credential through the American Association for Physician Leadership; and he obtained his MBA (with a focus in medical management) at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
