Dr. Ira E. Mayer is the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Maimonides Medical Center. He graduated from New York Medical College in 1975, completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at New York Medical College-Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York City in 1978, and completed a Fellowship in the Division of Digestive Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. He joined the Medical Staff of Maimonides Medical Center in 1980, following completion of his training; he also served as a Staff Physician at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center and as Assistant Attending Physician at Kings Highway Hospital in the 1980s. He is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. In 2000, Dr. Mayer was appointed the Chairman of the GI Performance Improvement Committee and in 2005 the Director of the GI Motility Laboratory, both at Maimonides Medical Center. In November 2011, he was appointed the Division Director and Fellowship Program Director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Maimonides. He has had faculty appointments at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the past, and is currently Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine (Gastroenterology and Liver Disease) at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Mayer is currently a member of the Executive Medical Council, the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and the Hospital-Wide Peer Review Committee, and has been Chairman of the Patient Care and Nursing Committee, Chairman of the Medical Staff Peer Review Committee and a Past President of the Medical Staff at Maimonides. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association, and a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endsocopy, the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Brooklyn Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Mayer has been involved in research and has published and presented at national meetings throughout his career. He has been recognized by the Castle-Connolly Guide as a Top Doctor in NY every year since its inception.
