Brooklyn’s Only NPH/Gait Clinic

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a rare condition caused by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. Fluid cannot properly drain and be absorbed, affecting brain function.

Maimonides offers the only specialized NPH/Gait Clinic in Brooklyn. Our neurosurgeons and neurologists offer research-driven, technology-supported hydrocephalus care. Our team takes a multidisciplinary approach, coordinating neurologists, neurosurgeons, and physical therapists who can diagnose, treat, and resolve problems related to NPH. Patients diagnosed and treated in the early stages of NPH have a strong chance of recovery.

NPH symptoms can be similar to diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, and are sometimes mistaken for signs of aging:

  • Issues with walking/mobility (walking, balance, falling, tripping, shuffling)
  • Problems with bladder control
  • Memory loss, confusion, or mood changes (or other symptoms commonly associated with dementia)

After a review of symptoms and medical history, our specialists perform a physical exam and may order diagnostic tests, including imaging tests, cerebrospinal fluid tests, gait analysis (timed walking test), PT evaluation, and neuropsychological testing

Treatment may include surgery to drain the excess fluid – neurosurgeons will review each case and determine an individualized treatment plan, depending on the stage of NPH present.
